Today I slept in, hit the library, bought three shirts, and failed to get my hair cut. Probably just as well; in this heat I'd probably get it cut way too short. The heat also seems to have fried my brain; Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance seems to be trying to say something about epistemology, but in a very roundabout way. This is another book I'd like to do as a reading group thing. It's that sort of reading.

Tomorrow I get to do groceries, room cleaning, lunch planning for the week, and maybe try to find work shoes that aren't half a size too big. (Note to self: not thick socks.) I may also smack the school website, since its booklist only includes the biochem I text. Outrageous.

The meat of this post springs from the photobucket account I forgot I still had! So I'm posting three icons I think need some air time. I really need to join some fandom icon communities and get my icons out of my hard drive. If you like these, comment and take; that's what they're here for.

No problem! I really love the evolution icon. It's text-based, has good design and includes snappy text. If I could get all my icon attempts to look that good, I would be thrilled.

Gravity is hardly a "theory" as it can be demonstrated as fact. To be a theory indicates that is an educated guess based on various pieces of the puzzle with a little belief thrown in. If objects occasionaly didn't fall or floated around, then gravity would be a theory. It doesn't mater if you believe in gravity or not, it will always get you.

Unless you can demonstrate that every single body of mass in the universe always obeys the inverse square law (and that's a lot of bodies), then Gravity remains a theory. The observation that a single apple accelerates toward the center of the Earth is a fact, but the generalization of that to the Law of Gravity is theory...as is the explanation for what gravity _is_ (folded spacetime or gravitons). Gravity is a theory _and_ a fact.

So is evolution.

Zen and the Art of Book discussion

I'm a huge fan of "Zen" (and it's sequel Lila, where he tears everything up and starts over). It's quite meandering, to be sure, but you don't often see books _about_ thinking.

So I'd be happy to talk about any part of it with you at your convenience. I'd even go grab a copy from somewhere if it were regarding something I'd need to follow along for.

You're probably right. The icon is a less-than-polite dig at the "evolution is a theory" sticker movement, playing off the difference between the laymen's and scientists' concept of what "theory" means.
