Post-Move Existence

Have moved. No one died, though there several close calls; this was a textbook example of how not to move. For the record, never

- Move midweek
- Assume you can move in one evening
- Plan to go to work the next morning
- Rely on the leasing agent's breezy comments about public transportation
- Move the day your roommate returns from a family trip
- Think, "oh, it'll all fit in the roomie's van, if we do a couple trips. I don't need to rent a U-Haul."

And that's just the stuff I remember off the top of my head. A thousand thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jcmcb and [livejournal.com profile] blankverses for their help moving heavy boxes; I owe them bigtime. Huge thanks also to [livejournal.com profile] norabombay and [livejournal.com profile] fairestcat for the sunday evening IKEA/Target run that made the apartment liveable. Last year I learned a lot about moving by letting dad handle most of the details, and watching him do it right. This year I learned by making a thousand mistakes, which you four helped bail me out of. I'm calling this move a learning experience and very character building, and moving on with my life.

The sea of boxes and bags in the living room has subsided to a largish lake and some puddles. This has left the living room very bare; we're going to need more furniture.

Posting this from [livejournal.com profile] miriel's computer. When dad brings the router (tomorrow, if all goes well) I'll be able to reconnect my computer to the world internet and start catching up on my friends page, which I'm roughly 300 posts behind on.

...you've no idea. ;-) We've missed you.

And I've missed you terribly. On the other hand, in the, um, roughly ten days I was offline, I managed to finish as many books as I did in all of July (three; I keep hoping I've forgotten one).

Ah yes, moving... On Monday I move myself back to the dorm for school... I'll have to figure out how to pack things into my little Corolla (I'm already thinking I'm gonna take essentials and what I can fit on Monday, and come back and pick up the rest Tuesday), as opposed to having loads of room in one of the Astro vans... I think either way I cut it, I have to make two trips (I load my Corolla and one of the vans, I drive my car, dad drives the other, that's two trips; or I load the Corolla Monday, come back for trip two on Tuesday; or I load the stuff in the old Astro van, and bring it back and exchange it for my car, again two trips, and I don't want to drive the old van down there...).

I think my biggest concern will be trying to figure out how to pack stuff into my car... with the vans, we typically took out the back seats, and worked stuff in however it seemed best - but at least I had one level floor. Now I've got to work with a trunk, a front seat, and the back seats....

In my (quite limited) experience, if you can swing it, it's easier to just get a U-Haul. Pack it the night before, drive it over, get five of your best friends to help you move furniture and pay for a dinner of their choice afterwards.

Good luck with the move, however you wind up doing it.
