Road Trip?

I'm considering a San Francisco to Portland road trip on or around the first week of March. Suggestions for to-do items and people to see ([personal profile] loup_noir?) are welcome. Left to my own devices, I will probably make a few motel reservations, throw a bike and several thousand calories of travel-friendly snacks in the back seat, load an mp3 player with audiobooks and singer-songwriter guitar anthems, and see what happens. Road cycling is likely; skiing is unlikely. Powell's is essential.

I'd take Hwy 1 as much as possible. You can go from Santa Rosa over to Jenner and then drive north on 1, past Fort Ross (if it's open, it's a nice little stopover), up along the coast, maybe stopping again in Elk to hike down to their wonderful beach. I live less than an hour from Elk. We could meet in Mendocino (aka Spend a C Note), which would spare you getting lost on our backwoods roads to get here. From Mendo, the drive through Fort Bragg and Westport is also very scenic. The stretch from 1 to 101 via Legget is a roller coaster of a forest drive. The alternative is 20 from Fort Bragg to Willits. Try to stay on 101. Pretty drive. There's a back road that gets you into Oregon. Ashland used to be quaint. Jacksonville is also cute. I'm lost for suggestions until you get to Powell's land. If you like good woolens, head over to the Pendleton outlet. I don't remember it being that long of a haul from Powell's, but I may have been drifty from an overdose of paper and ink.

Unfortunately, this has become a not great weekend. My guy has come down with something nasty. Someday, we'll manage to get our schedules coordinated, but this does not look like the right weekend.
