This weekend my classes are on spring break, and I am at FOGcon. I went to the Friday night reception straight from work: in a navy button-down, black slacks and sensible black almost-flats I looked exactly like a newbie writer on the convention circuit. I'm tempted to conjure a trunk novel* and run with it.

*Since this week's bus book is a rant against big pharma's marketing strategies, I'd dust off the Starship Troopers homage about veterans getting their voting franchise after massive brain surgery, the sort where neurosurgeons had to make choices when reconstructing major decision-making centers. I must respectfully acknowledge Cyteen's influence on this deathless plot bunny of ineffable genius, as well as exposure to articles on 21st century battle medicine and stateside rehab, and finally Scalzi's Old Man's War, a novel which moved me with its mediocrity in the most strict sense of "middle of the pack".

Or I can pull out the awesome Magic Genetics In Space worldbuilding. Either way, it's going to be a fun weekend.
