It didn't throw me out of the story but the effect of prologue-by-drabble really blunted the effect for me. I think I'm about the only one for whom this didn't work at all.
Prologue by drabble, or epilogue by drabble? I'm not sure how I would've reacted to the drabbles without the definition, because that threw me so badly, and on top of the story bomb closing the final chapter.
Weber's writing hits an entirely different id vortex for me--if I tell you that I identify with McKeon you may be able to tell what part of it is.
