Yeah, I thought you'd like Goblin rather better :) I kind of wanted the byzantine politics novel, though, and was a little annoyed that I didn't get more of that.
I think it would have gotten on the Hugo ballot even in a stronger year -- lots of people really liked it -- but this year it might actually have a shot at winning.
...I have mostly avoided Bacigalupi because everything I've heard makes his stuff sound super depressing, but this makes me want to read it. Have you read Stand on Zanzibar? Old-school, but what you say about ricochet makes me think a little about that. (Also extremely depressing, and I thought it was brilliant.)
