I am an afficionado of boarding school stories, and this ... did not really make use of the genre tropes. Or at least, the tropes it uses are very old-fashioned, dating back to the first couple of decades of the genre -- Nice Lady takes a Large House and fills it with students. The worldbuilding of the school itself, if you want to call it that, is limited -- there's very little structure to the students' days, limited discipline -- it felt unformed.
I feel the same way about McGuire's fiction being Great For Others, Not For Me. And I met her a few years ago, and was unimpressed, although possibly that's unfair, because I met her at the same time as I encountered the even-less-impressive Catherynne Valente, so maybe I was just in a bad mood by that point.
Awkwardly, I am co-programming a con at which McGuire is guest of honour in 2017...
