The fact that Aornis is a tributary of the river Styx

Yes. It's a minor plot point.

I'm glad you're enjoying The King's Peace. I'd really ease back on trying to find Aurthrian parallels and analogs, though. When I skimmed some of Jo Walton's usenet posts on the books, I got the impression she was using the mythos as a jump-off point, and wasn't too concerned about staying particularly close to the source material.

Re: change and apathy

I caught the part where the artificially static nature of the culture was explained... the problem I'm having is that I felt it was more explained than shown. (I think the vagueness about what I felt wasn't shown is a hangover from version one of the writeup, which was intended to be relatively spoiler-free. I need to just give up and admit these posts are, as a rule, going to be spoiler rich.)

I did see the WaW chapter - nice cliffhanger!

The Harry/Cho relationship is a beautiful example of teenage idiocy

No kidding. There were times I wanted to smack the both of them. But you have to give Rowling props for making Harry a bona fide adolescent.

Yes. You don't see a lot of those running around the heroic fantasy subgenre.

Umbridge creeped me out like practically no other evil character I can remember.

Umbridge makes me mad. She might've been significantly discredited if someone had stood up to her earlier in the book on the corporal punishment issue. (Disclaimer: US born and bred. We're pretty extremely anti-corporal punishment in my neck of thw woods. Bystanders have fits when parents lightly spank their own children. This may not be true in the UK.) That no one exploited that at all speaks to me of momentary universal character stupidity.
