Denver '08 Worldcon! Since Lois Bujold is a GoH, I think I sort of have to go.

...only memberships are already $130. I'm really trying to keep this journal PG-13, but WTF?

Cannot do a post on fannish exclusivity. Okay, I can, but I probably shouldn't. But this has stopped me when?

LMB as GoH! Instant mini Bujold con, only not so much with the "mini". This could be cool.

Convention Centers are incredibly expensive. For example, breakfast and lunch for about 100 people for 10 days? $60,000. For a 4 day tournament, our coffee bill is around $3000.

I mean, if I'd known they intended to have Lois as a GoH, I'd have considered being a pre-supporter, but they really do have serious costs to cover.

Intellectually, I understand they've got costs to cover, but my stinging-in-anticipation pocketbook has me whining a bit.

Buying a membership may have to be an early priority, just so I don't get stuck with $200+

That said, I was really hoping for Chicago: would have been a lot more convenient for me. Ah well.

Denver, Chicago - plane trip vs. possibly driving. I lose either way.

Double-ditto on the first comment; Worldcons are expensive for various reasons (from what I've heard) especially because they only happen once...you've helped on yearly cons, so you know that some of them make facilities agreements far in advance.

I think I have to go too, but only because I have new local friends who hit every US Worldcon, and because I have other friends in Denver. w00t, and such. Would have preferred Chicago because I have even MORE friends in Illinois and because I can drive there, but Oh Well.

Hey! If you go to Worldcon, I can meet you in person! If I go to Worldcon. Which I think I may have to - we'll see.

That sounds like a great idea.

I was talking with my mother about it. "Oh, it's in Denver?" Yup. "Who's the guest of honor?" Lois McMaster Bujold... "We're driving there. Take two weeks off." So I guess we're going. XD

APO's 2004 National Convention was not only in Denver, it was also at the Adam's Mark! So I can speak from personal experience that the place is really, really cool and is right on 16th street, which is the main drag for shopping, dining, entertainment, etc. What a coincidence!

Probably not; there's only so many places that can support a crowd of n thousand.

I'd be glad to help, although I can't guarantee you will be able to ride in a full Amtrak Superliner-I Coach-Cafe where all 59 other seats in the car are filled with fellow sci-fi fans/conventiongoers for 19 hours on your way there.

Though, if that DOES happen...I speak from APO convention experience that "Getting there truly can be half the fun."

So, start saving your pennies now. You should have a job by then, so you'll be worrying about vacation time. The con has been fun. We've run into a number of people we haven't seen for a long time. We start our next week of vacation tomorrow.

Glad you had a good time in Anaheim. I'm adjusting to the concept of planning a vacation two years in advance, but I'll get there eventually.

Bujold in Denver.

I may actually be settled enough to contemplate attending another Con. It's certainly been long enough. I'm starting to get nostalgic;-)

Denver is going to be wild for the Bujold fans. The odds of actually interacting with the GoH are low, but the parties should be impressive.
