Cites: All text-only icons are quotes from Lois McMaster Bujold's novels. Images from covers of same. #17 started life as the Baen Diplomatic Immunity cover; #3 and #4 are from the Sharing Knife duology. #4 also includes a mangled and out of context Tori Amos "Spark" quote; the text on #3 is from Tracy Grammer and Dave Carter's "Tanglewood Tree". I desperately love "Disappearing Man" by the same duo ("All rise! Behold the famous disappearing man / who comes in crimson robes / and leaves in yellow rags") but it doesn't fit in here at all. Notice how much this is stopping me from mentioning it.

I like these, and I'll credit you. Can I ask a really ignorant question? How do I install an icon?

Check the faq (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=1), but the short version is:
1.) get the URL of the image you plan to use (right-clicking and selecting "view image" will usually give you that information.)
2.) Log in to LJ
3.) Go to http://www.livejournal.com/editpics.bml (http://www.livejournal.com/editpics.bml)
4.) Use the "upload a new userpic" form to do just that. The form lets label each pic with a keyword and description; if someone else made the the userpic you're uploading, it's considered courteous to mention this in the description.
