Signed lease today. Moving party May 31st or June 1st; the goal is to get 90% of my stuff loaded into a 10 foot U-Haul and up a two- or three-story walkup in one day. I plan to bribe my next-door neighbors to help load if they're available. I also need someone who can drive the truck, because let's be honest: me + big rental truck = disaster in flashing neon. Or hey, maybe Second Wife and her oversized "I need it for the horse trailer" marshmallow truck can haul a non-horsey trailer. Friday night and Sunday midday are spoken for, but the rest of Memorial Day's three-day weekend is going to be spent putting my life in boxes.

North of you, south of work. I'll stick the details in email.

I will have to get your new address eventually. Unfortunately, I am absolutely no help trying to move you when I am here.

(and just as I was thinking about flying to DC this weekend, although that's really not enough time to plan this thing out...yeah, it's related to the McClung obsession, you don't even have to ask.)

If you randomly show up in DC, give me 2 days notice and we can do dinner. I have a kitchen and (until early June) a car! After early June I'll be close to the metro.

Congratulations

I hope you found a great place to live. So you just have to pack and move and then everything will be nicely settled!

I'm excited about it. Location's good, and it's a three-story walkup - not a basement! Packing is going to be okay, as long as I put the books in the small boxes.

Use Penske or Budget if you can possibly swing it! U-Haul's accident rate is something like seventeen times that of their nearest competitor, and it's mostly because of their abysmal maintenance. The LA Times did a five-part series. Seriously! Also, boxing/bagging in advance really does make a huge difference in terms of timing. Also helpful: not having four-year-olds trying to "help you pack."

But congrats on signing the lease!

This is true, true, true. I assume you don't have many large pieces of furniture to move?

What, doesn't everyone try to have the place 95% packed before the beer-and-pizza-bribed help arrives?

Furniture's pretty light: a dresser, 2 bookcases, 1 TV I don't want to carry by myself, your old TV, 1 easy chair. I'm moving about 2/3rds of two small rooms plus miscellaneous goods; the furniture is the only thing I couldn't do in shifts if I had a car.

I've had wonderful experiences renting from Penske, for what it's worth.

I will be in Alexandria this weekend but don't know if I'll have time to go in-city.

My primary criterion on this one is going to be: what's available? I'm doing this on short notice.

Let me know if you're around; I've got to pack, but I can break away from putting my life in boxes for a while if I know it's coming up.

That's actually how I got my experience with Penske: I had intended to rent from UHaul, but they didn't have anything available. They also were a big pain to deal with (IE, you tell them what you want, then someone calls you later with what they have available that's close)

Penske was much better. They even retroactively applied a AAA discount. My parents also had an outstanding experience with them as well.
