I went to New York City, and I had a great time, and I had a camera! In no particular order, I lost (and found) my day planner, forgot my PIN and found myself at Penn Station with about $0.06 and a credit card, discovered my cell phone recharger was 200 miles away on Sunday night, walked most of the way up Fifth Ave next to Central Park, criss-crossed Midtown, left Forbidden Planet unscathed, then visited the Strand; saw a tiny bit of the beautiful New York Humanity and Social Sciences library (the 5th Ave branch), completely failed to make it to any museums; did karaoke and Rock Band with [livejournal.com profile] limnrix and friends; caught up with [livejournal.com profile] scifantasy, and took a nap on the southbound bus before finishing my cheerful holiday reading. I owe [livejournal.com profile] limnrix and [livejournal.com profile] scifantasy huge thanks for rearranging their weekends to see me.

The cab clumps, like schools of fish, were eye-catching.

I splurged and took taxis twice, but I also made use of the subway to get around midtown and environs. (In the last week, I have used taxis three times. Between 1989 and 2002 I rode in a taxi once. Not counting the parent taxi services, of course.)

There's always so much going on in NYC. I was going for the sleeping-on-cold-stone guy and the biker, next to the noble lion statue, but people kept wandering into the field. All I did was resize and frame this; I may go back and crop it differently.

Mounted police. Awww. Included as an example of the horror that is ISO 1600. But also: horse. A block off Times Square. It must be a very placid horse.

Nice pictures.

I take it you didn't get to a Broadway show?

Even if you didn't get to a museum, the subway station at the Natural History Museum is worth seeing all by itself. The wall tile has been enhanced with shadows of extinct species in the background and related species in the foreground. The floor has what looks like fossils in it. [livejournal.com profile] rwl has a picture of me with a dodo in the station.

I didn't make it to the shows, or to the museums. Next time!
