Well, Marius didn't throw money at him because he was blackmailing (which failed spectacularly and hilariously), but because he still felt like he owed him for Waterloo (although with his knowledge of Thenardier's character, I feel like anyone who wasn't as, er, otherworldly as Marius might have figured out that maybe that episode wasn't quite as awesome as Pontmercy Sr. thought it was...)

Definitely an OH MARIUS moment. Also possibly pointing back to Hugo's feelings on reform? Thenardier's given chances to reform, and he... doesn't.
Yeah, actually, now that you mention it, Thenardier is rather an interesting meta-character -- most of the Brick harps on and on about how if only we had reform, so many problems would be solved -- but with Thenardier, he acknowledges that, well, not everything would be solved. There are still evil people, even when given opportunities. That's a really good point.
