Baru Comorant's home is invaded by economic imperialists who are brutal assimilationists. She decides to destroy them and help her people from the inside. Book One is "Baru destroys someone else's rebellion and gets everyone remotely likeable killed, including the woman she's been pining for / lusting after for hundreds of pages." If you read The Hallowed Hunt, Baru would have a lot to say to one of the very early Earl Horseriver.
Actually, you might like this novel! It's doing interesting, though grimdark, things with economics and warfare.
