Q: When do you feel worse walking out of the doctor's office than you did walking in?
A: Vaccination day.

My roommate, bless her, had an exciting Thursday: good review and corresponding pay raise at work, topped off by sneaking out exactly on time to protest at the Treasury. Meanwhile, I returned a library book and took a nap.

Doris Egan is going to be at FenCon, and I am too smart to spend money on hotel, airfare and assorted travel expenses just so I can harass Egan about when (if) she'll ever write another novel, and join the hordes of House fans on general principle. Yep. Besides, I'd rather impulse-travel to Canada or Mexico instead. I instead took the opportunity to splurge on clothes and hair accessories after work today.

I'm also doing local stuff. Who's going to the LoC book festival this year? I want to hear Gaiman and Singletary talk, but that's the sum of my ambitions.

My Friday night entertainment is the McCain vs Obama debate, window-shopping Ann Taylor Loft. I would rather talk about the clothes than the politics: one of these hasn't been on nonstop news for months.

We'd love to have you at FenCon, but I suppose it is a bit late.

It's not the timing so much as the rent check I'd blow in the process. The theme for 2008's fourth quarter is "Time, No Money".

Well, timing in terms of budgeting ahead, not paying last-minute airfares, etc. It's always possible to up and travel to somewhere at the last minute if you have nothing in the way. (My record not counting funerals is on Tuesday determining Jaimie and I were traveling to Pasadena on Friday for the weekend.)

I am - and possibly dragging my parents with because they want to hear James McBride speak (his brother was one of my mother's housemates back in the 70s, which fact, let me tell you, always throws me for a moment when I remember it: I mean, my mother! With housemates!). We're all nerds here.

Still, yes - shall look for you at Gaiman.

Small world! It might be interesting to see how much your mother remembers about the family.

It is, yeah. And sure, it's worth asking - though she's not the best for remembering things well. Though with my dad along, at least, there's some hope (he also digs Gaiman, at least on the Good Omens front).

Also, I've just finished reviewing the author lists and worked out that I'm pretty much going to either be in the Teen/Children tent or the Fiction/Mystery tent for the entirety of the time I plan to spend there. Which won't be as long as some years, given my parents aren't keen on an entire day in DC. Still, good times.

I'll be there, hoping to at least catch Gaiman and Katherine Paterson.
