It's rude to scare your roommate.

It's really rude to complain about how completely insane your Ubuntu distro has made you, then scare your roommate by playing the first five seconds of Sweet Emotion at about 135 decibels and then screaming. She might think you electrocuted yourself or something.

The point is, near-electrocution and virtual heart attacks aside, be kind to your roommates. Also, I finally beat my sound card into submission. Woo. Hoo.

Weekend!

Today my roommate was clocked doing 35 mph in a 25 mph zone. On her bicycle. How awesome is that? (She got off with a warning. I said I'd get her a cyclist's speedometer for her half-birthday.)

My adventure this afternoon evening is making nice with Ubuntu. Ha ha ha. And I didn't want to deal with a learning curve on a camera, ha ha ha. I can barely remember the moral equivalent of tying my shoelaces in code, if I ever knew it. Moya will soldier on! If only I can make the sound card and wireless work!

This evening I also made pasta and sauce for the first time since I moved. It's been too hot. (It's worth mentioning here that I was raised on pasta sauce not from a jar, and still tend to think of jar-sauce as Not Right.) Fortunately, the grocery store had a sale on ground beef this week, so I'm now stuffed on carbs and meatsauce, and have some stashed for lunch.

Friday night I went out drinking with co-workers on the Waterfront, which was devastatingly beautiful at sunset. If there is a more quintessentially DC moment than walking the mile from Foggy Bottom metro, past the GW dorms, past the bridge with someone's possessions stacked beneath the overpass, through Georgetown and along the little boats turned floating party pads, for the purpose of standing around getting buzzed until midnight with people you see for maybe five minutes during the day - even though you work in the same little building - I don't know what is. Good times in fabulous weather.

BTW, locals: anyone going to be around next weekend? I'm thinking of doing a labor day/"well, never had a housewarming" party thing. I supply snacks, you BYOB.

Every day is a winding road. )

Random time!

[livejournal.com profile] naominovik will be reading and signing at Bailey's Crossroads on July 16th. I need to go so I finally get the pronunciation of "Temeraire" from the horse's mouth, as it were.

2,000 year old date palm sprouted. There have been many claims of "ancient" seeds germinating but usually without well-accepted verification of the seeds' ages . . . the scientists dated shell fragments clinging to rootlets from the seed and arrived at an age of about 1700 years. The researchers suspect that the original seed was closer to 2000 years old but that the carbon the plant incorporated as it grew skewed the calculations.

Screen on the Green 2008.

I've got one tab open to update, and five other tabs open to today's computer adventure: installing the "Hardy Heron" Ubuntu distro of Linux. Partitions are weird. Watch this space for wacky Ubuntu learning curve fun and games!

(Oh drat, I was going to name this desktop Moya! Now I'm going to have to go back and rename everything! Ooops!)

Tomorrow: company picnic, more fun with Moya (I have a Moya! Everyone should have a Moya. But then you start renaming your peripherals, and it's all fun and games until you realize you're going to have to name one of your peripherals after the crazy hero), and figuring out what dinner will be for the rest of the week.
